How can science help to achieve the UN sustainable development goals in the Arctic?

The Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030), adopted by the UN in 2015, are global and they apply even to the Arctic region. The Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit Conference held in Rovaniemi on 14-16 November 2017 discusses how science can have a concrete impact on the achievement of sustainable development in the Arctic.

This will be the theme of the panel discussion "UN SDGs and the Arctic: Contributions and Needs of Arctic Science" on Wednesday November 15. Eeva Furman, Director of the Environmental Policy Centre of Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) will launch the panel with her opening remarks. The international level panellists come from the sphere of politics and from the scientific community. They all have a long background with the themes of Arctic and sustainable development. Gosia Smieszek of the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, who wrote her PhD thesis on Arctic decision-making, will chair the discussion.

The main theme of the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit conference is combining the UN's sustainable development goals with Arctic cooperation. The first day of the conference focuses on Arctic science, politics and economics from the point of view of the UN's sustainable development goals. The main theme of the second day is - alongside sustainable development - life in the Arctic. The conference organizers are the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland and the City of Rovaniemi.

Kuinka tiede voi auttaa saavuttamaan YK:n kestävän kehityksen tavoitteet arktisella alueella?

YK:n vuonna 2015 hyväksymät kestävän kehityksen Agenda 2030 -tavoitteet ovat maailmanlaajuiset ja koskevat myös arktista aluetta. Rovaniemellä 14.-16.11.2017 järjestettävässä Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit –konferenssissa keskustellaan, miten tiede voi vaikuttaa konkreettisesti kestävän kehityksen toteutumiseen arktisella alueella.

Aihetta käsitellään keskiviikkona 15.11. käytävässä paneelikeskustelussa “UN SDGs and the Arctic: Contributions and Needs of Arctic Science”. Paneelikeskustelu käynnistyy Suomen ympäristökeskuksen (SYKE) Ympäristöpolitiikkakeskuksen johtajan Eeva Furmanin avauspuheenvuorolla. Kansainvälisen tason panelistit tulevat politiikan piireistä ja tiedeyhteisöstä. Heillä kaikilla on pitkä tausta arktisen ja kestävän kehityksen teemojen parissa. Keskustelua johtaa arktiseen päätöksentekoon suuntautunut väitöskirjatutkija Gosia Smieszek Lapin yliopiston Arktisesta keskuksesta.

Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit -konferenssin pääteemana on YK:n kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden yhdistäminen arktiseen yhteistyöhön. Ensimmäisen konferenssipäivän ohjelma painottuu arktiseen tieteeseen, politiikkaan ja talouteen YK:n kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden näkökulmasta. Toisen päivän pääteemana on kestävän kehityksen ohella elämä arktisella alueella. Konferenssin järjestelyistä vastaa Lapin yliopiston Arktinen ja Rovaniemen kaupunki.
